County Cork Mourns the loss of Former Mayor Patrick gerard Murphy
Tributes are flowing in following the unexpected death of former County Cork Mayor, Patrick Gerard Murphy, at his home in West Cork yesterday. Councillor murphy, a Fianna Fáil representative, had served on Cork County Council since 2008 and held the position of Mayor during the 2018/2019 term.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his deep sadness at the loss of a ”friend,fellow party member and councillor.” He highlighted Councillor Murphy’s unwavering dedication to his constituents and his tireless work on their behalf. Mr. Martin also noted Councillor Murphy’s personal strength, overcoming early life challenges with courage and continuing to champion the rights of people with disabilities through his work with the National Learning Network in Bantry. He described the late councillor as “warm, positive and inspirational,” adding that he always valued his company, finding him “friendly, kind and insightful.”
Current Mayor of County Cork, Councillor Mary Linehan Foley, echoed the sentiment of loss, stating the day brought great sadness to the council. “Patrick was not only a colleague, but also a friend to manny across this chamber,” she said. “His passion for his community, dedication to public service, and kindness distinguished him in every role.” She conveyed the council’s deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.
Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Cork County Council, acknowledged Mr. murphy’s significant and lasting contributions to the county. She specifically cited his leadership in areas such as housing strategy, planning, arts, heritage, and local growth, noting the positive impact on numerous communities. “His legacy will continue in the work he did and supported,and he will be sorely missed by all in the Executive and the wider Council organisation,” Ms. Murrell stated.
Councillor Murphy is survived by his brothers, michael and Noel. He was predeceased by his sister,Marguerite,and his parents,Mary T and Patrick.
