Strong Canadian Showing at World Boxing Championships in liverpool

LIVERPOOL, UK – September 12, 2024 – Team Canada is ‌demonstrating significant‌ progress at the World Boxing Championships in‌ Liverpool, highlighted by semi-final qualification for Viktoria ‍Penney and a surge ⁣in national interest following recent Olympic success. ⁢Despite an earlier setback at a competition in Kazakhstan this year, the program’s depth allowed for regrouping and improvement.

“Olympic-style boxing isn’t‌ about the win-loss record, it is about‌ constantly learning and improving together,” stated a Boxing Canada representative.

The national team is experiencing a wave of new talent following the Paris Olympic cycle, where veteran athletes Wyatt Sanford secured a Bronze medal and Tammara achieved success in ⁤both amateur ‍and ‌professional boxing. This success has driven a substantial increase in ⁣registration numbers across the country.

“Our goal is ‍to invest in the right athlete at the right level of competition ⁣at the right time for long term, sustainable success,” said ⁣Executive Director Christopher Lindsay. “Boxing‍ has a proud history and with Wyatt’s ⁢Bronze medal in Paris and Tammara’s success…our registration numbers have ‌shot up.”

Boxing Canada supports grassroots programming while‍ focusing ‍on ⁢national team achievements as a⁤ source⁤ of inspiration for Canadians. The institution has set ⁣ambitious goals to repeat their medal performance at LA2028 and increase the medal count ⁢at the⁣ 2032 Olympics.

Viktoria Penney will compete in her semi-final bout on September⁢ 13th. Fans can follow the remaining competition on world Boxing’s YouTube ‍channel and CBC Sports coverage ⁤at https://www.cbc.ca/player/sports/live.
