Will Francis NHL Debut: Cancer Survivor Plays Rookie Tournament

Ducks Prospect Will Francis, a Three-Time Cancer Survivor, to ​Compete in Rookie Tournament

IRVINE, CA – Anaheim Ducks⁣ prospect William Francis will realize a hard-fought dream this weekend, set to participate in ​his first ‍NHL rookie ​tournament after ⁤a remarkable journey battling cancer three times. The 24-year-old defenseman will compete in the⁤ 2025 Golden State Rookie Faceoff, taking on the San Jose Sharks on Friday and⁢ the Los Angeles⁤ Kings on⁢ Sunday at Great​ Park Ice in‌ Irvine, ​California.

francis was initially diagnosed‌ with acute lymphoblastic ⁤leukemia in ‌2020, beginning a five-year fight that ⁣required three separate rounds of treatment.​ Now in remission, the ⁤defenseman is poised to showcase⁤ his skills ⁢on‌ the ice for ⁢the organization that drafted him in the sixth round (No. 163‍ overall) of the‌ 2019 NHL⁤ Draft.

“It’s a surreal experience,”⁣ Francis​ said. “Ever ‍since 2019, it’s been something that’s been a goal of ⁢mine and a dream of mine. It’s just ‌super cool to finally achieve⁤ it after everything I’ve been ⁣through.”

While acknowledging the timing wasn’t initially ‍as‍ he’d envisioned, Francis maintains‍ a positive outlook. “looking back⁤ at 2019, ‌I probably hoped it ‌would’ve ​come a ​little earlier but, good things come to those who wait.”

Prior to⁣ earning this⁢ opportunity,Francis ⁣honed his skills⁤ at the University of Minnesota-Duluth,playing for the program from 2021-2025.
