Ducks Prospect Will Francis, a Three-Time Cancer Survivor, to Compete in Rookie Tournament
IRVINE, CA – Anaheim Ducks prospect William Francis will realize a hard-fought dream this weekend, set to participate in his first NHL rookie tournament after a remarkable journey battling cancer three times. The 24-year-old defenseman will compete in the 2025 Golden State Rookie Faceoff, taking on the San Jose Sharks on Friday and the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday at Great Park Ice in Irvine, California.
francis was initially diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2020, beginning a five-year fight that required three separate rounds of treatment. Now in remission, the defenseman is poised to showcase his skills on the ice for the organization that drafted him in the sixth round (No. 163 overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft.
“It’s a surreal experience,” Francis said. “Ever since 2019, it’s been something that’s been a goal of mine and a dream of mine. It’s just super cool to finally achieve it after everything I’ve been through.”
While acknowledging the timing wasn’t initially as he’d envisioned, Francis maintains a positive outlook. “looking back at 2019, I probably hoped it would’ve come a little earlier but, good things come to those who wait.”
Prior to earning this opportunity,Francis honed his skills at the University of Minnesota-Duluth,playing for the program from 2021-2025.
