Ralston Firefighter and Community Pillar John Chester Dies at 88
OMAHA, NE – John George Chester, a retired Ralston Volunteer fire and Rescue Department firefighter and lifelong community volunteer, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, at the age of 88. Chester’s decades of service touched countless lives in the Omaha area, from responding to emergencies as a first responder to bringing smiles as a Keystone Kop with the Tangier Shriners. His passing marks the end of an era for those who knew and worked alongside him.
Chester’s commitment extended far beyond firefighting. A dedicated Freemason, he was a member of Papillion Masonic Lodge #39, scottish Rite, and the Tangier Shriner Center, frequently participating in parades alongside the Ralston Fire Dept. as a beloved Keystone Kop. He also proudly served in the VFW and Papillion American Legion Post #32,and was an active member of the Ak-Sar-Ben Amateur Radio Club. His loss will be deeply felt by these organizations and the wider community he so faithfully served.
Born to [parents’ names not provided], Chester is survived by his daughter, carrie Peek, sister Barb Klaudt, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents,sister Rosalie Novotny and her husband Tony,and brother-in-law Jim Klaudt.
A Masonic Service will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 10:15 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM at West Center Chapel. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM.Graveside services and interment with military honors will take place at 1:30 PM at omaha National cemetery,14250 Schram Road,Omaha.
