Vatican Official ⁣Warns Against ‘Sham’ Participation in Synodal ⁣Processes

VATICAN CITY – A‍ top ⁢vatican official, Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernández, has cautioned against superficial engagement in ‌synodal processes, warning that genuine synodality requires ⁣both hierarchical repentance and broadened participation from ⁣all church members. Fernández emphasized the need to include diverse voices – “even if they cause us problems” – and criticized ‍instances where consultations ⁤create the impression of openness while ultimately deferring to ⁤the interests of bishops or priests.

Speaking recently during a course for‍ new bishops, Fernández stated that a synodal path must‍ encompass the full participation of all church members⁤ in evangelization, moving⁢ beyond mere‍ meetings ‌to actively contribute to a diocese’s mission. He further explained that true synodality necessitates changes in church structures ‌and procedures, but cautioned‌ that it must remain focused on missionary outreach, stating, “It’s just about putting this in the background, which does not immediately serve to reach ‌everyone with the first proclamation.”

Fernández underscored ⁤the ⁤importance of an inclusive church, asserting that⁢ a “synodal church with a‍ missionary heart is never a ⁤relentless judge ⁣who blocks the way.” He advocated for embracing individuals of all kinds, with varying charisms and ⁤expressions, to effectively reach all corners of the community. The ⁤remarks came as 192 new bishops from across ‍the globe participated in the introductory course for new bishops, ‌including German Bishop Klaus Krämer of Rottenburg.
