Rangers Surge to Defensive Prowess, Lead MLB in Runs Saved
ARLINGTON, TX – The Texas Rangers are establishing themselves as a defensive juggernaut in the 2025 season, currently leading Major League Baseball in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). A strategic emphasis on positioning, coupled with strong individual performances, has propelled the Rangers to the top of the defensive rankings, setting them apart from competitors like the Chicago Cubs.
The Rangers’ success isn’t solely based on individual fielding ability; it’s a calculated approach. While players like shortstop - currently ranked first in MLB with 18 Runs Saved – and right field (18 Runs Saved, 2nd) are contributing substantially, the team’s true advantage lies in its infield and outfield positioning. They are tied for seventh in the league with 21 Runs Saved from infield positioning and rank fourth with 7 Runs Saved from outfield positioning, utilizing partial shifts to maximize their defensive efficiency. This has resulted in a league-leading 77% conversion rate of ground balls and bunts into outs, and a seventh-best 69% out rate on fly balls, line drives, and popups.Despite strong reputations, catcher Jonah Heim (-6 runs Saved) and third baseman Josh Jung (-2) have underperformed defensively, though Jung’s struggles follow an outstanding 2023 postseason. Ezequiel Duran and Josh Smith have combined for 6 Runs Saved in 52 games.
The Rangers are the only team in MLB to rank within the top seven in both ground ball/bunt and fly ball/line drive/popup out rates,a testament to their well-rounded defensive system.
