Milk Prices Set to Dip as GST Changes Take Effect September 22
New Delhi: Consumers can anticipate a slight decrease in the price of certain packaged milk products starting September 22, 2025, following a revision in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates.While fresh milk remains unaffected, the price of Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) milk is expected to see reductions, potentially impacting household budgets across the contry.
The GST Council’s decision to exempt UHT milk from the 5% tax will translate to price adjustments for brands like Amul and Mother Dairy. This change comes as welcome news for consumers grappling wiht fluctuating food costs, though the overall impact will be focused on packaged varieties.
Here’s a breakdown of the anticipated price adjustments, based on current rates:
Buffalo Milk: From Rs 75 to Rs 71-72 per litre
Cow Milk: From Rs 58 to Rs 55-57 per litre
Mother Dairy Full Cream: From rs 69 to Rs 65-66 per litre
Mother Dairy Toned milk: From Rs 57 to Rs 55-56 per litre
Mother Dairy Buffalo Milk: From Rs 74 to Rs 71 per litre
Mother Dairy cow Milk: from Rs 59 to Rs 56-57 per litre
however, Amul Managing Director Jayen Mehta clarified that the GST on fresh pouch milk has always been zero, and therefore, prices of these products will not change. “The government has reduced the GST on ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk from 5% to 0%, meaning only UHT milk will become cheaper starting September 22,” Mehta stated, according to news agency ANI.
The revised GST rates are scheduled to be implemented on September 22, 2025, after wich the new prices will be reflected on store shelves. This adjustment aims to provide some relief to common consumers amidst ongoing economic pressures.
