Bulgarian MEP Urges EU Recognition of Ukraine Conflict’s Impact on National Security
Brussels, Belgium – Ivaylo Valchev, a Member of the European Parliament, is calling for Bulgaria to be officially designated as a country directly impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Valchev argued that Bulgaria’s demonstrated commitment as a reliable security partner and investor within the EU warrants full access to associated benefits, particularly increased funding for security infrastructure and personnel.
The plea comes as Bulgaria faces heightened security concerns stemming from the geopolitical instability in the Black Sea region. Valchev emphasized that Bulgaria has consistently proven its dependability as an investor in the EU’s broader security framework and should, therefore, be entitled to utilize all available advantages. He specifically highlighted the need for financial resources to bolster national security capabilities, encompassing infrastructure development, personnel training, and overall preparedness.
“If Bulgaria is an investor who has proven that it can be relied on, we must be able to use all the benefits,” Valchev stated. “We must invest in security, which costs money, requires funds, infrastructure, people and Bulgaria to receive this opportunity from the EU.”
