The rejection, with 71 votes against the measure in the 89-member Legislative Council (LegCo), represents a blow to the city’s burgeoning gay rights movement and raises questions about Hong Kong’s commitment to equality.
The proposed legislation stemmed from a 2023 court ruling that mandated the government establish a framework for recognizing same-sex unions following a challenge to legalize same-sex marriage.While the court ultimately rejected the full legalization of same-sex marriage, it acknowledged the
