Linfield Men’s Soccer Falls to Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 in Home Opener
mcminnville, Ore.- The Linfield Wildcats suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, dropping their season record to 0-3-0. Despite a promising start and a goal from senior Evan Stafford, the Wildcats were unable to contain the sagehens’ attack.This loss marks the third consecutive defeat for Linfield to begin the season, highlighting early challenges for the team as they navigate a demanding schedule. Stafford’s goal, the first of the season for the ‘Cats, offered a brief spark, but ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome Pomona-Pitzer’s offensive pressure. The team now looks to regroup before facing Warner Pacific on Monday night.
The Sagehens quickly established a lead, scoring in the sixth minute. Linfield responded effectively, with Stafford leveling the score in the 22nd minute after receiving a well-placed pass from Tate Bliss. Stafford skillfully navigated a defender before finding the back of the net.
However, pomona-Pitzer regained the lead late in the first half with a goal off a deflection, taking a 2-1 advantage into halftime. The second half saw increased physicality,resulting in a total of seven cards issued throughout the match. despite a competitive effort,the Wildcats conceded another goal in the 88th minute,solidifying the 3-1 final score.
Linfield and Pomona-Pitzer were evenly matched in corner kicks, each earning five. The Wildcats recorded seven shots with five on target, including Stafford’s goal and two attempts from Kelly.
