Panthers Secure Thrilling Five-Set Victory Over Maryville, Conclude Florida Trip with Loss to UPR-Mayaguez
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Ohio Dominican Panthers volleyball team split its pair of matches in Florida this weekend, overcoming a tough challenge from Maryville University in a five-set thriller before falling in straight sets to UPR-Mayaguez. The results mark a mixed start to the Panthers’ non-conference schedule as they prepare for a three-match road trip and the start of conference play.
The Maryville match saw the Panthers rally from a set down to force a decisive fifth set, ultimately prevailing 15-11. This hard-fought victory demonstrates the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure, qualities that will be crucial as they navigate a challenging schedule. The loss to UPR-Mayaguez,while a setback,provides valuable experience against a strong opponent.
Against Maryville, the Panthers dropped the first set but responded to win the second. After a back-and-forth third set, ODU went on a five-point run late to regain control and force the fifth. The final set was intensely competitive, with Maryville initially surging ahead before ODU countered with a seven-point run to take an 8-6 lead. The teams battled to an 11-11 tie before the Panthers closed out the match. Brynn Clark contributed to the victory.
The panthers were unable to replicate their success against UPR-Mayaguez, falling in straight sets (0-3). Ashley Aselage led the team offensively with 10 kills, while Jenna Peters added 8. Defensively, Christen Tarter recorded 15 digs and Gabrielle Kirker contributed 14. Despite a competitive first set, UPR-Mayaguez pulled ahead late. The second set went to extra points, but UPR-Mayaguez secured the final two points.A five-point run in the third set sealed the match for UPR-Mayaguez.
Ohio Dominican will continue its road swing with matches against Shippensburg, Frostburg State, and Pitt-Johnstown in Frostburg, Maryland, before beginning conference play.
