UK Prime Minister Starmer Reshuffles Cabinet Following Deputy Prime minister’s resignation
LONDON – September 5, 2025 – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is undertaking a cabinet restructuring following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela rayner over a tax issue. Rayner stepped down after government advisor Laurie Magnus steadfast she had violated the Ministerial Code of Conduct by failing to properly pay taxes on the £800,000 purchase of a home.
Rayner, 45, admitted to under-reporting property taxes related to the Hove, southern England property she purchased while serving as Minister of Housing. Magnus stated Rayner “acted in good faith” throughout the investigation, but the conclusion necessitated her departure.
In a handwritten letter, Rayner expressed being “stricken” that her time in government was ending in this manner.
Starmer stated Rayner was ”right” to seek and adhere to the advice of the autonomous advisor. He has appointed Ramie as the new Prime Minister and also expects Ramie to serve as minister of Justice. Finance minister Reeves will remain in her position, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Rayner’s resignation represents a meaningful loss for the labor Party. She was widely considered a potential successor to Starmer, and enjoyed strong support from both party members and labor unions, having grown up in public housing.
The departure comes at a challenging time for the Labour Party, which secured a decisive election victory last July but has since struggled to consolidate its position amid economic difficulties and internal divisions over issues such as immigration and the conflict in Gaza. The situation could further exacerbate tensions within the party.
