Mezőfalva, Hungary – A municipal representative is recovering in hospital after being injured in an attack by a wild red deer on September 4, 2025. Péter Pethest, a local official in the village of Mezőfalva, was struck by the animalS antlers, sustaining a puncture wound to his biceps.
The incident underscores the increasing potential for human-wildlife conflict in Hungary’s rural areas. While deer attacks are relatively rare, growing deer populations and expanding human encroachment into natural habitats elevate the risk. Pethest’s injury prompted authorities to remove the deer from the area, fearing further encounters and potential harm to residents.
According to reports from Blikk, Pethest was found on the ground in a cluttered area after the attack. His wife transported him to a local hospital for treatment. He specifically identified the deer’s antler as the source of the injury. Following the incident,authorities dispatched personnel to locate and subdue the deer,ultimately removing it as a precaution.
