West Nile Virus Cases Rising in Steuben County,Health Officials Warn

FORT WAYNE,Ind. (WPTA) – ⁤ Steuben County is experiencing a notable increase in ⁢West Nile Virus ⁢activity this summer, ⁢according to ‍local health ⁤officials. Health specialist Jason Army reports a significant jump in infected mosquito pools compared to previous years.

While West Nile Virus has been present in‍ Indiana ⁣for 26 years, Army says this year’s numbers ⁣are concerning. Typically, Steuben County sees‍ one to two mosquito pools ⁢test ‍positive for the virus annually. This year, though, six infected pools have already been identified.

“The‍ animals are the ‌host of West‍ Nile…the mosquitoes are the⁤ ones that actually transmit it to humans,” Army explained. “Animals can become affected with it, but‍ they usually don’t show any signs or symptoms.”

Despite the increase, Army emphasizes ⁢that residents can take proactive steps to protect themselves. He ⁤advises wearing long sleeves and pants when ⁢outdoors, and diligently eliminating standing⁣ water sources.

“Make sure that we’re emptying any containers that hold water, like birdbaths and that,” Army said. “We wanna make⁤ sure that we’re switching the water out every so frequently enough so it’s freshwater not⁢ stale ‌water. Make sure that your screens are in your house if you‌ have your windows open,‌ if you have screens that don’t have holes so they don’t get inside.”

West Nile⁢ Virus is ⁤spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While most infections are mild, symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, ‌nausea, vomiting, and sometimes rash. In rare cases, the virus can ‌cause serious neurological illness.⁢

Residents‍ are encouraged to take precautions and report any potential mosquito breeding grounds to the Steuben County‍ Health Department.
