Medication-Induced Falls a Leading Cause of Death for Older Americans, Experts Warn

A recent article published in JAMA⁣ health Forum (August 1,⁣ 2025) reveals older Americans are ‍at significant risk of⁣ fatal falls linked to their‌ medications. ‍The study highlights that ⁣falls now claim more ‌lives annually than breast cancer, prostate⁣ cancer,⁢ or motor vehicle accidents.

The warning comes after one reader shared a harrowing experience with spironolactone, a blood pressure medication. after being prescribed the drug to lower blood pressure from 140/80, the individual experienced two falls – one resulting in ‌fractured vertebrae and a subsequent loss ⁣of four inches in height, and another causing knee⁤ lacerations requiring a three-week rehabilitation ⁣stay. The cardiologist, according to the reader, did‌ not disclose the potential for ⁤spironolactone to cause fainting or falls.

While controlling high ‍blood pressure is⁢ crucial, overtreatment leading to dizziness or blackouts can be life-threatening,experts say.Beyond spironolactone, other medications identified as increasing fall risk for seniors include anti-anxiety‌ drugs (benzodiazepines), antidepressants, and certain pain relievers like opioids and gabapentinoids (gabapentin and pregabalin).

Individuals experiencing dizziness or⁤ unsteadiness are urged to consult⁣ their primary care provider for a ⁢medication review and potential “deprescribing” of non-essential drugs.
