Mother Receives Reduced Sentence in Daughter’s Strangling Death – Reason Revealed
İzmir, Türkiye – Ayşe Vural has received a reduced prison sentence after being convicted of intentionally killing her daughter, Zeynep Vural. The case, which has drawn meaningful attention in Türkiye, concluded with a sentence of 16 years and 8 months imprisonment, a reduction from the initial 20-year sentence handed down by a lower court. the reasoning behind the reduction has now been officially announced.
The initial trial saw Ayşe Vural sentenced to 20 years, later reduced to 16 years and 8 months due to mitigating circumstances including provocation and her “good state” during the hearing. Following an appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeals, the 1st Criminal Chamber determined the act occurred under provocation, leading to the overturning of the original sentence. Defendants SV and Ö.V., who were tried pending, were acquitted, and that acquittal was upheld.
A subsequent re-trial at the İzmir 23rd High Criminal Court resulted in the 16-year and 8-month sentence. During the proceedings, Ayşe Vural stated her daughter’s descent into drug use was the catalyst for the tragic events, expressing immense grief and stating, ”My daughter drew the rope of our house.” She also expressed her distress at seeing drug dealers incarcerated, stating no sentence could alleviate her pain.
While the court acknowledged Ayşe Vural’s claim of lacking intent to kill, it concluded she acted with the intent to cause harm. The justification for the sentence highlighted that the incident involved more than a simple attack, and that legitimate defense, fueled by excitement, fear, or haste, was not a factor in the outcome. The detailed, reasoned decision reveals a history of long-term problems stemming from Zeynep Vural’s behavior and actions. This included a suicide attempt ten years prior, requiring intervention to prevent her from jumping from a roof, and a previous incident where she self-harmed with a razor, causing injury to herself and family members.
The decision specifically cites Zeynep Vural’s psychological discomfort and addiction, noting her aggressive behavior towards family members. Moreover, the court noted that on the day of the incident, Zeynep Vural verbally and physically assaulted her mother.
According to a decision from the İzmir 2nd Family Court, Zeynep Vural presented a danger of violence. Considering these factors, the court emphasized that a reduction in the sentence was warranted.
