Chile Launches Expanded Pension Guarantee (PGU) Benefit

SANTIAGO, CHILE – Chile’s Social Security Institute (Instituto de Previsión Social - IPS) is rolling out an expanded Pension Guarantee (PGU) benefit, providing financial support to eligible seniors. Applications are now being accepted through various channels, with phased implementation based on age groups.
Eligibility Requirements
- The request process is verified through the IPS once submitted.
- Residency Requirement: applicants must demonstrate 20 continuous or discontinuous years of residence in Chile, applicable to individuals aged 20 and older, with a minimum of four years of residency within the five years preceding the benefit request.
- Pension Limit: The applicant’s calculated base pension must be less than or equal to $1,210,828 Chilean pesos. Benefits received under repair laws are not included when calculating the base pension.
How to Apply
The IPS offers multiple avenues for applying for the PGU:
- In person at Chileate branches of the social Security Institute.
- Online via www.chileatiende.cl using a Unique Key. A video application option is also available on the same platform, not requiring a Unique Key.
- through the applicant’s municipality or AFP (Administradora de Fondos de Pensiones) insurance compartment, if affiliated.
Application Timeline for Repair Benefit Recipients

In September, the PGU will automatically increase to $250,000 Chilean pesos for all recipients aged 82 or older. No application is needed for this increase. A phased calendar extends benefit eligibility to other age groups through 2027.
