by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Breaking: Borussia ⁤Mönchengladbach midfielder Florian Weigl is set ‌to join saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab, ⁢with the german ⁤side granting ⁣the Saudi club a purchase option. The move comes after Weigl‌ was left ‍out of the squad for SundayS 0-0⁤ draw against Hamburger SV.

Weigl arrived ⁢at⁢ Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2023⁢ from Benfica SL‍ following a one-year loan, completing a permanent transfer for a fee of ⁤€7.2 million. During his time with the “Foals,” he has featured ⁢in 94 matches, contributing ⁣to nine⁣ goals.‍ He frequently captained ⁤the team last season, taking over the armband from Philipp Sander, whose contract expired this summer.

At Al-Shabab, Weigl would ‍become one of the club’s most valuable players, with a reported market value of €6 million, alongside‍ Yannick Carrasco and perhaps⁤ Habib Diallo, who is reportedly nearing a move⁣ to Ligue 1. Al-shabab finished sixth in the Saudi Pro League‍ last season and ⁣recently ⁤appointed Imanol Alguacil as their ⁣new head coach. ⁤Alguacil ⁢previously managed Real Sociedad ⁢from December 2018 until June 2025.

Should the ⁢transfer be completed, ‌Weigl will be the seventh German player to compete in‌ the Saudi Pro League. Currently, Gökhan Gül and Koray Günter are under contract with Al-Okhdood Club. Previously, marko Marin (Al-Ahli,Al-RAED),Robert Bauer (Al-Tai⁤ FC),Amin Younes, and Heiner Backhaus (both Al-Ettifaq) have also played⁣ professionally in Saudi Arabia.

weigl initially joined Borussia⁤ Mönchengladbach under coach Gerardo Seoane, but his role appeared to diminish ‌towards the end of the season. ‌His departure could create a void in midfield for the Bundesliga⁤ club, as he⁣ established himself as a key player during his tenure.
