Ohio University Students Have Options for Health Insurance Coverage
ATHENS, OH – Ohio University students have multiple options for health insurance coverage for the 2025-2026 academic year, including the university-sponsored plan, remaining on a parent’s plan, or utilizing other qualifying coverage. Students must actively choose a plan or submit a waiver to avoid being automatically enrolled in the OU health insurance plan.
The university plan offers four deductible options and four out-of-pocket maximums, details of which are available on the enrollment Forms and Policy Brochures website.
Students covered by an alternative health insurance plan may opt out of the OU plan. Those who remain on their parents’ insurance, or have other qualifying coverage, can utilize the OhioHealth Campus Care center and access available medical services, with OhioHealth Campus Care billing their insurance provider directly.
The deadline to submit a waiver for the Fall 2025 term is September 12. Once approved, this waiver will automatically extend coverage for the Spring and Summer 2026 terms.
Students who miss the September 12 deadline might potentially be eligible for a one-time courtesy late waiver, provided they meet specific criteria. To qualify, students must possess health insurance coverage that meets the university’s waiver requirements, have not previously received a courtesy late waiver or filed an appeal, and have no claims filed against the OU student health insurance plan. Applications for the courtesy late waiver must be submitted within 30 days of the initial deadline.
Navigating health insurance can be challenging for new students, but ohio University aims to provide clear options and resources to ensure access to healthcare.
