Caen Ranks Low in Sports City Index, Potential Ligue 2 Promotion Could Boost Standing
Caen, Normandy, is near the bottom of a new ranking of French sports cities, a study reveals. The agglomeration’s position is largely influenced by the recent relegation of its primary football club, Stade Malherbe Caen.
The analysis, conducted by Actu.fr, specifically examines “Comparable urban areas” – agglomerations with populations around 100,000. Among 16 such cities, Caen ranks 13th, scoring only three points based on the study’s criteria. The study notes that cities like Annemasse and Béthune, of similar size, do not have high-level sports clubs, while cities like Clermont and Dijon demonstrate greater sporting success.
impact of potential Ligue 2 Promotion
Leaders in Caen are focused on Stade Malherbe Caen’s return to Ligue 2, and a accomplished promotion would substantially improve the city’s ranking. The relegation of the team, coached by Maxime d’Ornano, has demonstrably impacted the city’s sports profile.
If Stade Malherbe Caen achieves promotion, the city’s position in the ranking would jump to the level of Reims, with four teams achieving the second tier of sporting success. This would better reflect the agglomeration’s size. the study suggests that to align with demographic realities, Caen would ideally have at least one team competing in the highest level of its sport, which would place it around 25th in the national ranking. This puts pressure on Caen’s other sports clubs, including CBC (Caen Basket Calvados) and Vikings (Caen Handball), to strive for higher levels of competition.
