Jameela Jamil has publicly discussed her experience using a weight loss medication, revealing she has been taking Wegovy for several months and has lost a critically important amount of weight.
The actress and activist shared her journey on the podcast Dear Media, explaining her decision to use the drug after years of struggling with her weight and body image. Jamil stated she had previously been “very, very against” weight loss medication, but ultimately decided to try it after consulting with her doctor.
“I just didn’t have any side effects,” Jamil said, acknowledging that side effects are a known possibility with Wegovy. She detailed losing around 70 pounds as starting the medication.
Jamil’s comments sparked discussion online, particularly given her past advocacy against diet culture and unrealistic beauty standards. She addressed this, stating she understands the criticism but feels comfortable with her decision, emphasizing it was made in consultation with medical professionals.
Wegovy, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition. It effectively works by mimicking a hormone that regulates appetite and food intake.
The drug has gained significant popularity, leading to supply shortages at times. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. More serious, though rare, side effects have also been reported.
Jamil’s openness about her experience adds to the growing conversation surrounding weight loss medications and their role in addressing obesity. Serena Williams also recently discussed using Wegovy, further amplifying the discussion.
