Los Angeles Sparks Decline Contract Option for Layshia Clarendon
The Los Angeles Sparks announced on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, that they have declined to exercise their contract option for guard Layshia Clarendon. The decision comes after Clarendon completed their first season with the Sparks, having been acquired in a trade with the Connecticut Sun prior to the 2023 WNBA season.
Clarendon, a veteran of eight WNBA seasons, appeared in 33 games for the Sparks in 2023, averaging 9.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds in 26.8 minutes per game. They shot 41.5% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range. Clarendon’s arrival was intended to provide experienced leadership and playmaking ability to a sparks team undergoing a rebuild.
The Sparks finished the 2023 season with a 17-23 record, failing to make the playoffs. Clarendon’s performance was considered a positive contribution, but the team ultimately opted to pursue other directions as they continue to reshape their roster.
Clarendon was originally drafted 1st overall in the 2014 WNBA draft by the Liberty. They have also played for the Atlanta Dream, Sun, and Minnesota Lynx
