University of Mindanao Graduates Dominate Mechanical Engineering Board Exam
Davao City – against formidable odds, Marjun Bustamante Espinosa, a 2024 graduate of the University of Mindanao (UM), secured the second-highest score in the August 2025 Mechanical Engineers Licensure Examination. This achievement comes as a testament to resilience and dedication, notably after Espinosa battled chickenpox just weeks before the crucial exam.
Overcoming Adversity to Achieve Excellence
Espinosa attained a remarkable rating of 92.30 percent, trailing only john Kerwin Noche Enriquez from Batangas State University-Alangilan,who topped the exam with 92.60 percent. Adding to UM’s success, Chris Jericho Mangyao Rivas also placed among the top ten, earning the eighth spot with a score of 89.75 percent.
The 24-year-old Espinosa recounted the challenges he faced during a recent interview, explaining that a month prior to the exam,he contracted chickenpox, forcing him into a two-week isolation period.this meant missing valuable review classes and incurring meaningful medical expenses. Despite these obstacles, Espinosa persevered through self-study.
“It was difficult for me, not only because the medication was costly, but also because I had to isolate myself for two weeks and could not attend my review classes,” Espinosa shared.
Born and raised in Barangay Lacson,Calinan,Davao City,Espinosa balanced his studies with part-time work to finance his education. He attributes his success to a consistent mindset of striving for excellence, both academically and personally.
“I have always carried the same mindset, both before and after graduation-to give my best in everything I do, because I believe the rewards will follow. Not just for myself, but more importantly for my family,” he stated.
Strategic Planning and Support System
Espinosa’s preparation involved a disciplined routine of long study hours, meticulous note-taking, and dedicated review sessions, typically from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays. He also incorporated physical activity, such as jogging with his dorm mates, to manage stress.
“The primary strategy to ace the board exam is really consistent review and study. The most effective approach is to start reviewing months, or even a year, before the exam and to identify the study method that works best for you,” Espinosa advised.
He also emphasized the crucial role of his support network.”The support I received, especially from my family, friends, and loved ones, had an immeasurable impact on me. It was one of the biggest reasons why I kept pushing forward. My success now is also my family’s success, because they never failed to nurture me with love and support-and that means the world to me,” he said.

Future Plans and Aspirations
Looking ahead, Espinosa plans to pursue a master’s degree and contribute to the academic community as a lecturer. While he anticipates potential opportunities in fieldwork, he currently believes teaching offers the most immediate path forward.
He offered words of encouragement to future mechanical engineering examinees, stressing the importance of commitment and self-discipline. He acknowledged the inevitability of challenges and self-doubt, framing them as stepping stones toward greater achievements.
“To my fellow reviewees who did not make it this time, I pray that you hold on to your promise to yourself to become engineers. there will always be second chances. As one of our review lecturers said, ‘You are just delayed but not denied,'” Espinosa shared.
