A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck western Turkey on Thursday evening, causing buildings to collapse in the Balixir province, according to reports from Turkish news agency Anatolia. The tremor was felt across the region, including in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:53 pm local time in the Balikir region, near Istanbul. AFAD recorded three aftershocks measuring 4.6, 4.1, and 4.0 magnitudes at depths of 6.78 km, 7 km, and 16.07 km, respectively.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the situation via X (formerly Twitter),stating,”I wish safety for all citizens affected by the earthquake that struck Balikir and was felt by the inhabitants of the neighboring states.” He affirmed that all relevant state institutions have initiated necessary measures and are closely monitoring the situation.
Interior minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that emergency teams have commenced search and rescue operations throughout Istanbul and the surrounding areas. Reports indicate that residents in Istanbul who felt the quake moved to open spaces, such as parks, as a precautionary measure.
