Trans-Papua Highway Upgrade to Boost Highland Economy, Control Inflation
WAMENA, HIGHLAND PAPUA – The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is prioritizing the completion of a crucial 61-kilometer stretch of the Trans-Jayapura-Wamena road in Highland Papua province, aiming for completion in 2025. The upgrade is expected to dramatically improve connectivity and alleviate soaring prices of essential goods in the remote region.
governor of Highland Papua,John Tabo, revealed the acceleration plans following a recent meeting with President Prabowo subianto in Jakarta. Discussions centered on expediting growth across Papua’s new autonomous regions (DOB), with the Wamena road project taking center stage.
“The condition of the road between the Mamberamo River bridge and Elelim in Yalimo has been a major impediment to efficient transport,” governor Tabo stated. “Currently, the damaged infrastructure significantly slows the movement of goods from Jayapura to wamena, impacting the local economy.”
The deteriorated road conditions have directly contributed to inflationary pressures within Highland Papua. Delays in the delivery of staple foods, building materials, and other essential supplies have driven up costs for residents. Improved infrastructure is anticipated to stabilize prices and enhance economic opportunities.
“we anticipate that with a fully functional road, four- and six-wheeled vehicles will be able to reach Wamena more reliably, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for our citizens,” Tabo explained.
The project, fully funded through the state budget (APBN), represents a meaningful investment in Highland Papua’s infrastructure. While the exact financial allocation remains under the purview of the Ministry of Public Works, the commitment signals a strong governmental focus on regional development.
Context: Trans-Papua highway and Regional Development
The Trans-Papua Highway is a strategically important infrastructure project designed to connect the remote regions of Papua and West Papua, fostering economic integration and improving access to essential services. The project, initiated in the early 2000s, has faced numerous challenges including tough terrain, logistical hurdles, and land acquisition issues.
Highland Papua, established as a new autonomous region in 2022, is one of five newly formed provinces in Papua, created to improve governance and accelerate development in the region. The province, encompassing the districts of Agats, Asmat, Dekai, Ilaga, Kenyam, and Wamena, relies heavily on external supply chains, making efficient transportation networks vital for its economic sustainability.
