Rare Genetic Condition Affects Newborn Son of Actor Onur Tuna
Istanbul, Turkey – The newborn son of Turkish actor Onur Tuna, known for his role in the popular series “Avlu” (The Yard), has been diagnosed with Apert syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. the news was shared by Tuna and his wife, Mira Sema Erol, prompting an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues.
Apert syndrome is characterized by premature fusion of certain skull bones, affecting the shape of the head and face. This early fusion, known as craniosynostosis, can restrict brain growth and lead to developmental delays. Infants with Apert syndrome often exhibit distinctive features including a wide, long forehead, shallow eye sockets, and a beak-like nose. A hallmark of the condition is also the presence of syndactyly – fusion of the fingers and toes, often described as “mittened hands and feet.”
According to medical literature, Apert syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in 65,000 to 85,000 live births. The condition is typically caused by a mutation in the FGFR2 gene, though mutations in the FGFR1 or FGFR3 genes can also be responsible. The genetic alteration can be inherited from a parent, but in most cases – approximately 97% – it arises spontaneously during fetal progress.
While there is no cure for Apert syndrome, a multidisciplinary approach to treatment can significantly improve the quality of life for affected individuals. Surgical interventions are frequently enough necessary to correct craniosynostosis, relieving pressure on the brain and allowing for normal development. Further surgeries may be required to separate fused fingers and toes, improving hand and foot function. Ongoing care typically involves specialists in craniofacial surgery, genetics, ophthalmology, and developmental pediatrics.
Tuna and Erol, who also have two other healthy children, have not disclosed specific details regarding their son’s treatment plan. However, they have expressed gratitude for the support they have received and remain optimistic about their son’s future. The couple is currently seeking care for their son at a leading hospital in Istanbul, specializing in pediatric craniofacial surgery.
