by Emma Walker – News Editor

Noise Barriers Installation Begins on E313 Highway Toward Hasselt

Preparatory work commenced June 30, but the Agency Roads & Traffic has officially begun installing noise barriers along the E313 highway leading toward Hasselt. The barriers will reach heights of up to 6.5 meters.

The project aims to improve the quality of life for residents, particularly those near the lindekens residential area, by providing acoustic shielding. Agency Roads & Traffic chose August for the work, anticipating lower traffic volumes.

Work Schedule and Traffic Management

The installation is expected to continue untill the end of September.Through traffic on the E313 will be maintained in two narrowed lanes in both directions.

Traffic heading toward Hasselt will utilize the leftmost lane typically reserved for vehicles traveling toward Antwerp, facilitated by paving in the central reservation. The breakdown lane toward Antwerp will temporarily function as an additional lane. A speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour will be enforced within the work zone.

driveway Closure at Herentals-West

The driveway at the Herentals-West complex toward Antwerp is closed for the duration of the project to ensure site security. Motorists will be directed to follow a detour via the N13, Wolfstee, and Toekomstlaan to access the Herentals-Industry complex.

Highway Noise Pollution: A Growing Concern

Highway noise pollution is a important environmental and public health issue, impacting millions globally. Prolonged exposure can lead to sleep disturbances, cardiovascular problems, and cognitive impairment.

Noise barriers, like those being installed on the E313, are a common mitigation strategy. They work by blocking sound waves, reducing noise levels in surrounding communities. The effectiveness of thes barriers depends on factors such as height, length, and material.

Belgium, like many European nations, has increasingly focused on reducing noise pollution from transportation infrastructure, investing in noise reduction technologies and implementing stricter regulations.
