Raiders Safety lonnie Johnson Jr. suffers Foot Injury During Training Camp

Las Vegas Raiders safety Lonnie johnson Jr.sustained a foot injury during Saturday’s practice at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.Initial reports indicate a fractured fibula in his right foot, perhaps sidelining the veteran for an extended period.

The injury occurred when Johnson collided with defensive end Maxx Crosby while attempting to tackle running back Raheem Mostert. Johnson was promptly removed from the field and underwent initial evaluation. Further testing, including an MRI, is underway to determine the full extent of the damage.

According to sources close to the team, recovery time could range from 10 weeks to six months, depending on the severity of the fracture and whether surgery is required. this timeline casts doubt on Johnson’s availability for the start of the regular season, scheduled to begin September 8th against the Carolina Panthers.

Johnson,29,signed a one-year contract with the Raiders this offseason after a journeyman career that included stints with the Houston Texans (2019-2021),tennessee Titans (2022),New Orleans Saints (2023),and Carolina Panthers (2024).He was projected to be a key backup safety, providing depth and versatility in the defensive backfield, particularly in formations utilizing three safeties.

Throughout his six-year NFL career,Johnson has recorded 199 total tackles,15 assists, and four interceptions in 83 games, including 20 starts. His experience and physicality were expected to contribute to the Raiders’ defensive improvements under new Defensive Coordinator Gus Bradley.

The Raiders’ coaching staff will now need to reassess their safety depth chart. Potential replacements include Trevon Moehrig, Roderic Teamer, and undrafted rookie Brett Thompson. the team may also explore options in free agency or through potential trades to address the void left by Johnson’s injury.
