Aventura Founder’s Final Resting Place Revealed at Turnberry Golf Course

Soffer to Be Interred Near 18th Hole of Beloved Course

The final resting place for Don Soffer, the visionary who founded and named the city of Aventura, has been announced. His eternal repose will be at a cherished landmark he created: the Turnberry Isle Country Club golf course.

A Unique Final Journey

Those frequenting the Don Soffer Exercise Trail, and indeed many South Florida residents, were unaware of the precise location where the city’s namesake will forever be laid to rest. His permanent home will be situated near the tee box of the 18th hole at Turnberry.

The unique burial site has drawn some surprise. It’s kind of weird, haha, remarked North Miami-Dade resident Lee Harris. I didn’t know people could get buried at a golf course.

In Florida, private property burials are permissible, provided the site remains under two acres, and Turnberry is indeed Soffer‘s private property. This detail has been met with approval by some locals.

Aventura resident Camila Miranda shared her thoughts: That sounds appropriate, because he loved this community. When Soffer acquired the land in the 1970s, it was largely swampland. The golf course was among his initial developments, predating the establishment of Aventura as a city by two decades.

A Golfer’s Tribute

The 18th hole now marks not just the culmination of a round, but Soffer‘s final destination. Golfer Eric Harris plans a personal salute during his upcoming play.

August 14th, I’m playing there, Harris stated. I’m going to find the 18th hole, give him a little salute and hope my ball finds the hole.

Community Impact and Development

Don Soffer‘s legacy is deeply intertwined with the transformation of South Florida. His development of the Turnberry area significantly impacted the region’s landscape and economic growth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami-Dade County’s population has grown by over 10% since 2010, indicating continued development in the area Soffer helped shape.
