Deion Sanders Navigates Sons’ NFL Paths Differently
One son welcomes dad’s presence, the other requests distance
Football legend Deion Sanders is offering support to both his sons pursuing NFL careers, but his approach is tailored to each son’s unique request.
Shedeur’s Request for Space
Shedeur Sanders, quarterback for the Browns, has asked his Hall of Fame father to refrain from attending practices. Shedeur believes his current position on the team’s depth chart doesn’t warrant the spotlight that his father’s presence might bring.
Deion Sanders on his son Shedeur asking him not to attend Browns practices: “Shedeur told me not to come. He didn’t want me to come. He was like, ‘Dad, I may get three, four reps in practice. I don’t want you seeing that. No, I’m not where I want to be. Let me get where I need to be.’ It’s so funny because this is his first time ever, and he’s dealing with it like a pro. He ain’t mad. He ain’t bitter. He’s like, I got work to do but I’m going to put in this work. One thing, they’re going to have to let me play, preseason is going to come. When preseason comes, watch me work.” pic.twitter.com/xG935fUqI6

Sanders expressed admiration for his son’s professional approach to his rookie season. In the NFL, undrafted players often face a steeper climb to secure a roster spot. For example, in 2023, only 19 undrafted free agents made opening day rosters across the league (NFL.com).
Shilo Welcomes Father’s Support
In contrast, Shilo Sanders, an undrafted safety trying to make the Buccaneers’ roster, actively encouraged his father’s presence at training camp. Deion Sanders noted that Shilo was “happy” to have him there.
Personal Health Update
The commentary comes as Deion Sanders recently disclosed his ongoing recovery from bladder cancer. He remains committed to his role as head coach for the University of Colorado while managing his personal health and supporting his sons’ professional aspirations.
