Netanyahu Plans Gaza Annexation: Expansion & Displacement Concerns

Israeli Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich has stated that Gaza is an integral part of Israel and that plans for its future are moving from a wishful idea to a realistic work plan. This statement, reported by Haaretz, suggests a shift in Israeli policy regarding the Gaza Strip.

Smotrich expressed a desire for a larger Israeli presence in Gaza than the former Gush Katif settlements, which were evacuated in 2005. He indicated that Gaza offers the potential for more expansive Israeli planning.

These remarks appear to contrast with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s previous assertions that Israel does not intend to permanently settle or control Gaza, nor to forcibly relocate its population. Observers suggest that Smotrich’s statements reflect current plans and the political landscape more accurately than Netanyahu’s public declarations.

In parallel, the Israeli army has reportedly introduced a new strategy for the “siege of the Gaza zone,” which could involve cutting off humanitarian aid and electricity. The Times of Israel reported that the army plans to significantly expand ground operations into areas of Gaza not previously targeted, aiming to increase pressure on Hamas.

while specific areas for this expanded operation were not detailed, it is speculated that these might include locations where hostages are believed to be held, an action Israel has largely avoided until now. The Israeli army recently announced it controls approximately 75 percent of the gaza Strip.
