josé Augusto Alves, who served as vice-president of the municipality of Castelo Branco from 2017 to 2020,is now leading a coalition list for the upcoming elections. This coalition unites the Social Democratic Party (PSD),the People’s Party (CDS),and an autonomous movement.

The electoral landscape also features two former mayors, often referred to as “dinosaurs,” who are returning to lead municipal chambers they previously presided over. Carlos Pinto de Sá, the current mayor of Évora for the CDU (Unitary Democratic Coalition), is completing three consecutive terms, the legal maximum for the municipality. He is now heading the CDU list for the Montemor-o-Novo chamber,a position he held from 1993 to 2013.

The second returning mayor is Vitor Proença. Ineligible for reappointment in Alcácer do Sal, Proença is now the CDU candidate for the Chamber of Santiago do Cacém.He previously led this municipality between 2001 and 2013.

Along with former mayors seeking to reclaim their posts, the elections also include candidates who have held other significant municipal roles and are now making their debut as mayoral candidates. Paulo de Morais, who was vice-president of the Porto Chamber and ran as an independent in presidential elections, is now the PSD candidate for the Viana do Castelo Chamber.
