Seattle: WA Attorney General Pauses Federal Benefit Restrictions

Federal Agencies Halt Enforcement of PRWORA Policy changes in Several States Amidst Lawsuit Challenge

In a meaningful growth, the U.S. Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Education, and Labor have agreed to suspend enforcement of recent policy changes affecting eligibility for federally supported services. This agreement comes as a response to a lawsuit filed by a coalition of states challenging the interpretation of the Personal Responsibility and Work Prospect Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). The suspension will remain in effect until at least September 3, 2025, providing a reprieve for states and individuals impacted by the contested changes.

The lawsuit, which targeted the federal government’s revised interpretation of PRWORA, prompted this temporary halt. The agreement ensures that no penalties or enforcement actions will be taken against individuals or entities for actions taken in accordance with the previous PRWORA regulations during the specified period. This allows for continued stability in the administration of federally supported services while the legal challenge proceeds.
