Fingal County council approved planning permission in 2022 for the 23,600 square meter facility, which had state backing. The project was ultimately halted by Amazon after ESB Networks indicated that power could not be supplied within the proposed timeframe due to existing network constraints in the area.
“AWS was disappointed that it did not prove possible to proceed with this project. If conditions allow, we do hope to be able to make other high-tech investments elsewhere in Ireland,” Amazon stated to The Irish Times. ESB Networks confirmed ongoing discussions with Amazon regarding the connection for the facility, clarifying it was a “server recycling plant, not a data center.”
ESB Networks added, “ESB Networks was still actively working on this with the developer up until the decision was taken not to proceed in Dublin.” Amazon has invested approximately €22bn in Ireland to date and employs around 6,500 individuals across Dublin, Drogheda,
