After years of delays, largely attributed to insufficient initial funding, the city of Trieste, specifically the San Giovanni district, is set to gain a state-of-the-art sports complex. Elisa Lodi, the Councilor for Public Works for the Municipality of Trieste, confirmed the timeline in a telephone interview. “We anticipate the gym being ready and delivered by the end of October,” Lodi stated. “Initially, for the entire 2025-2026 sporting season, the municipality will manage the facility. Later, we will transition to a concessionaire.”
Grandstand, changing Rooms, and Operations
Several sports clubs in Trieste have already expressed interest in managing the gym, though specific names are being kept confidential. The facility will be approved for both volleyball and basketball, with provisions for a five-a-side football pitch also included for indoor soccer matches. “there will be multiple changing rooms to accommodate different disciplines,” Lodi added, “and a grandstand capable of hosting spectators.” Giulio Bernetti is the sole manager overseeing the project, with technical support from the Municipality’s Ingrid Umk.
Adjacent Green Space Planned
The future concessionaire will be responsible for ensuring morning hours are available for schools. The complex is designed to be fully accessible, allowing for adaptive sports like Baskin. “A green area will be developed near the structure using Pinqua funds,” Commissioner Lodi concluded. The main entrance will be situated on Piazzale Gioberti. A meeting with the gym management commission is scheduled for next week.
