Erik Menendez Hospitalized, Attorney Seeks Release Amid Parole Hearing Preparations
Erik menendez, currently serving a sentence for the 1989 murders of his parents, has been hospitalized due to a “serious medical condition,” prompting his attorney to request a prison furlough. The 57-year-old, along with his brother Lyle, was recently resentenced to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. Their parole board appearances are scheduled for August 21 and 22.
Menendez was taken to an outside medical facility on Saturday and remains there in “fair condition,” according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. His lawyer, Mark Geragos, told TMZ that a furlough would allow Menendez to adequately prepare for his upcoming parole hearings, calling it the “only fair and equitable thing to do.” Geragos did not disclose the specifics of Menendez’s medical condition.
This growth follows a recent court order for Los Angeles prosecutors to explain why the Menendez brothers’ murder convictions should not be re-examined in light of new evidence suggesting sexual abuse by their father. While the defense has historically argued self-defense due to alleged abuse, prosecutors maintained the motive was financial gain. The order came in response to a habeas corpus petition filed in May 2023, separate from their resentencing efforts.Representatives for Governor Gavin Newsom’s office and the Menendez family have declined to comment.
