Lawyer Alleges Prime Minister and President Receiving Advice Outside Attorney General’s Office
Lawyer Tanya waqanika has asserted that the Prime Minister and the President are obtaining counsel from individuals external to the Office of the Attorney General. Waqanika made these claims while representing Barbara Malimali, the recently terminated Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption Commissioner, in court. Leave was granted for a judicial review challenging malimali’s dismissal.
Waqanika indicated that the manner of her client’s removal from office should be a critically important concern for the public. She expressed doubt that the advice preceding these actions originated from the Attorney General’s Office. Moreover, she stated that citizens have a right to no who is orchestrating these decisions, especially given the involvement of taxpayer funds.
The state can anticipate further legal challenges arising from the findings of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) regarding Malimali’s appointment, Waqanika added. Meanwhile, FBC News has learned that settlement negotiations in this matter have encountered difficulties, and new directives have been issued.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Prime Minister are ongoing.
