Beverly Hills Embraces “Clueless” with Inaugural Fan Day

Iconic Film Celebrated with Film Screenings, Fashion, and Nostalgia

Beverly Hills is rolling out the red carpet for its beloved cinematic export, “Clueless,” marking the film’s 30th anniversary with a city-wide celebration culminating in the first-ever “Clueless Day.” The festivities have already included a poolside screening at the historic Beverly Hills Hotel and a lively performance by the ’90s tribute band As If.

A City Dressed in Plaid and Nostalgia

The vibrant spirit of the 1995 cult classic has permeated the city for weeks. A special “Clueless”-themed collection, curated by the film’s costume designer **Mona May**, drew significant crowds at The RealReal on Melrose. On Saturday, La Cienega Park became a hub for devoted fans and Street Food Cinema enthusiasts, many sporting outfits inspired by Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport, for a free outdoor screening of the movie.

The event buzzed with the sounds of the ’90s, courtesy of a local DJ, and offered a variety of food trucks. Vendors sold themed merchandise, including yellow plaid bucket hats and Labradoodles adorned with miniature “Clueless” costumes, capturing the joyful essence of the film.

Cross-Generational Appeal Dominates Celebration

The appeal of the 1995 film was evident, bridging generational gaps. Rickie Downing, 43, attended with her 15-year-old daughter, Naomi, who was remarkably dressed in a replica of Dionne’s iconic red velvet dress. I had to show her where Mean Girls and all of those things came from. This is the original, Rickie explained, highlighting the film’s foundational influence.

Melody Edwards, 39, shared her lifelong admiration for the characters. This event was all over social, and I’m such a ’90s fan, she said. When I first saw Clueless, I just idolized Cher. I thought she was the coolest girl, and Stacey Dash’s character, Dionne, was such an icon for me and for the culture. Seeing her on the big screen alongside Alicia Silverstone was just amazing.

Brad Ludwick, 42, who operates a “Clueless”-themed Airbnb in Phoenix known as “Whatever Wonderland,” reminisced about his initial viewing. I remember seeing the movie when it first came out in 1995. I saw it with my mom and my sister, and I‘ve loved it ever since, he recounted.

Pets Get a Taste of “Clueless” Glamour

In true Los Angeles fashion, pets were also part of the “Clueless” festivities. A tiny Chihuahua, sporting a pink and yellow plaid ensemble worthy of Cher herself, nearly bumped into a woman balancing food from Gracias Madre while wearing an oversized Dionne-inspired hat. The sight prompted the reporter to reflect on the long overdue official city recognition for the film, posing the question: why we, as a city, had let 30 full years elapse before giving Clueless an official, mayor-endorsed day of recognition? The reporter concluded by emphasizing the film’s impact, stating, an alternate version of Beverly Hills where Cher Horowitz never shopped, gossiped, did makeovers, or dated her ex-stepbrother? As if!
