Vegas Arts Scene Buzzes with Sinatra Portrait Unveiling and Brush Sculpture Refresh
Las Vegas is abuzz with recent artistic developments, including the unveiling of a new portrait featuring legendary crooner Frank Sinatra alongside bandleader Brian Newman, and a important refurbishment of the iconic Dennis Oppenheim-designed paintbrush sculptures in the Arts District.
The striking portrait, a testament to the enduring legacy of “The Chairman of the Board,” was created by acclaimed Vegas artist Erica German. This artistic tribute captures a moment with Newman, a close friend and bandleader, alongside the inimitable Sinatra, adding another layer to the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
Simultaneously occurring, the Arts District’s prominent Oppenheim-designed paintbrush sculptures have undergone a revitalization. While the updated, brighter LED lighting has been met with approval, some, like Las Vegas native and arts historian Brian “Paco” Alvarez, have noted a departure from the original design, specifically the less “frizzy” tips of the sculptures, which they argue are characteristic of actual paintbrushes. Despite thes aesthetic critiques, the refurbishment is largely seen as a positive enhancement for the neighborhood, a welcome improvement over previous installations.
A Nod to the “Shaman” and a Fond Farewell to a Vegas Fixture
In a moment of shared understanding within the entertainment community, “Mavericks” co-producer Matt Franzetti humorously suggested summoning a shaman, referencing a past event at the Paris Theater in November 2022. During the run of “Bat Out of Hell – The Musical,” a shaman was brought in to address perceived spiritual disturbances. While the shaman’s presence was memorable, it did not translate into increased ticket sales, as the musical concluded its run on January 1, 2023. Franzetti, who was part of the Base Entertainment team that managed the show, shared this anecdote near the Plaza Showroom, a venue that, thus far, has not required such spiritual intervention.
The las Vegas entertainment scene is also mourning the loss of Jerry jones, a beloved figure who was instrumental in defining the term “cool hang” in the local vernacular. Jones, who passed away on July 1 at the age of 62 after a prolonged illness, was a constant companion and supporter of countless shows and events. His influence on the city’s vibrant nightlife and cultural gatherings is deeply felt.
A “Cool Hang doubleheader” is scheduled for Friday, August 15, to celebrate Jerry’s life and legacy. The festivities begin with a celebration of life event at The Copa at Bootlegger Bistro from 5-8 p.m., followed by a continuation of the party at Kenny Davidsen’s show at Piazza at Tuscany, which will run until 1 a.m. Both events are free of charge, with the sole request being to “be harmonious,” a fitting tribute to Jerry’s unifying spirit. The “Cool hang Alert” tradition is now permanently dedicated to his memory.
