Dr. Stan Houston, a public health expert, has stated that outdoor events are the least risky settings for contracting respiratory viruses, contrasting them with indoor venues like bars with low ceilings during winter.
The Ministry of Primary and Preventive Care acknowledged that large gatherings can elevate the risk of exposure to respiratory viruses, including measles. The ministry advises individuals attending such events to ensure thier vaccinations are current, maintain good hand hygiene, and stay home if they are unwell. These recommendations are consistent with established measures to curb the spread of measles.
According to the ministry, vaccination rates in Calgary and Edmonton have seen an increase. As of thursday, there were no confirmed or probable cases of measles linked to the Stampede.
