Andrés Caniulef reappears on social networks after having been in the ICU

Andrés Caniulef Recovers After Near-Fatal Infection

Journalist Shares Harrowing Ordeal from ICU to Social Media

After a terrifying brush with a severe infection following a knee injury, Chilean journalist Andrés Caniulef has reappeared on social media, updating followers on his recovery from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

A Sudden Turn for the Worse

Caniulef recounted the alarming progression of his injury, which began as a seemingly minor blow to his right knee. What was initially dismissed as insignificant quickly escalated over a couple of days, leading to excruciating pain and a rapid deterioration of his health.

“This left last Friday. I hit my right knee, but it was nothing that could be considered relevant,” Caniulef initially stated. He later elaborated on the rapid decline: “On Saturday I had a very faithful knee, so I went to the doctor and gave me medications. The next day I was worse and at night, at 5 in the morning (Monday) I woke up crying from pain.”

Septic Shock and Induced Coma

The journalist’s condition worsened drastically, revealing a dangerous infection. “It was a septic shock. A bacterial cellulite (affects the skin) of the right leg and that the entire leg involved and could have extended to the genitals. He stopped in time. It was much more serious than anyone could think,” he revealed.

The severity of the situation necessitated his admission to the ICU. “I arrived at the UCI because they induced me a comma, since it was generating septicemia,” he explained.

A Slow Road to Recovery

Currently, Caniulef is under strict orders for absolute rest. He described his current state as moving in slow motion and limited in mobility. This ordeal highlights the critical nature of seemingly minor injuries when infection takes hold. In 2023, the World Health Organization estimated that sepsis affects nearly 50 million people globally each year, underscoring the potent threat it poses (WHO).

Andrés Caniulef shared his recovery progress on social media.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Caniulef has shared glimpses of his recovery, including moments of respite with loved ones and a visit to the barbershop, signaling a return to normalcy.
