LIV Golf Expansion Theory from Phil Mickelson Leads to Brutal Response

Phil Mickelson‘s proposal for an expanded LIV Golf tour, which could impact a potential merger wiht teh PGA Tour, has been met with widespread criticism. Mickelson, who controversially joined LIV Golf at its launch in 2022, suggested on social media that the tour could double its size to 120 players, with a significantly busier schedule of 35 events featuring dual shotgun starts.

Though, many golf fans, particularly those loyal to the PGA Tour, reacted negatively to Mickelson’s idea.some even urged him to abandon LIV Golf and return to his PGA Tour roots. One fan commented, “Phil, LIV is a failed experiment, but you all banked it. Take the personal W (win) and move on.”

Amidst stalled merger discussions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, another fan proposed a compromise, suggesting a combined tour of 20 events at prestigious venues, with qualification for these events being the primary focus. Mickelson described this concept as “awesome,” but it was one of the few instances where he avoided criticism.

Former PGA Tour player and commentator Colt Knost responded sarcastically to Mickelson’s proposal, remarking, “That’s a lot of concerts!” Knost was referencing the concerts that often accompany LIV Golf events, featuring artists like Jason Derulo and Sublime.

Traditionalists also voiced their opposition, arguing that while occasional team events like the Ryder Cup are acceptable, a 54-hole LIV Golf format woudl never gain their approval. Another critic stated, “No one wants to see shotgun starts, let alone dual shotgun starts with more players that no one knows.”

Mickelson is currently participating in The Open Championship at Portrush, with his tee times scheduled for 7:19 am on Thursday and 12:09 pm on Friday.
