Amsterdam Drivers Face Summer of Disruptions
Major road closures and maintenance snarl traffic across the city
Get ready for gridlock: Amsterdam faces weeks of traffic headaches as major roadworks disrupt key routes. Authorities are urging commuters to rethink their travel plans in an effort to alleviate congestion.
Coentunnel Closure Causes Detours
The second Coentunnel shut down last night for essential maintenance, including upgrades to fire resistance and new asphalt. Traffic heading from Amsterdam-West to Amsterdam-Noord will be rerouted until Monday, September 15. Drivers must detour via the A10 South and A10 East to get around the closure.
A4 Maintenance Leads to Delays
Significant maintenance is also underway on the A4 between the Hoek and Burgerveen junctions. This has reduced the number of available lanes in both directions, causing potential delays of up to an hour. The advice is to use the train to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
Amstelveenseweg Shut Down
The Amstelveenseweg is closed near the A10 viaduct for the next six weeks due to construction. While public transport buses can still navigate the area, all other motorized traffic is being diverted via the A10. Cyclists and pedestrians can still pass through the west side under the viaduct. Details on the construction are available online. The closure will remain in effect until August 20.
Traffic Congestion Worsens
The closure of the A10 South and East in recent weeks has already caused major traffic problems in and around Amsterdam. “The expectation is that this nuisance will not decrease in the coming weeks,”
according to a Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson. As traffic jams cost the Dutch economy billions annually, innovative solutions are needed to address congestion (Netherlands Government, 2023).
Rijkswaterstaat advises drivers to avoid using their cars during this period if possible. The roadworks on the A4 are expected to continue until August 20.
