Polestar Australia ready to sell NVES credits, but some brands are off the table on principle – drive.com.au

Polestar Ready to Sell Emission Credits in Australia

Some automakers are off-limits due to principle.

Electric vehicle manufacturer **Polestar** is poised to sell its New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) credits in Australia. However, the automaker has reservations about which brands it will do business with.

Polestar’s Position on NVES Credits

**Polestar** has stated it is ready to participate in the NVES credit market. However, the company is ethically opposed to selling credits to certain brands, though specifics were not disclosed.

The CEO of **Polestar** has also refuted claims made by the CEO of **Mitsubishi** regarding Australia’s new emissions regulations.

Mitsubishi’s Concerns

**Mitsubishi** has voiced strong concerns over the tough new emissions standards. The company plans to move forward with combustion versions of the 2026 Outlander, Triton and ASX, relying on PHEVs as a transitional option.

**Mitsubishi’s** CEO is seemingly unconcerned with investing in EV infrastructure, stating it is “Not our core business.”

For context, in 2023, electric vehicles accounted for 16% of new car sales worldwide, demonstrating a growing consumer interest and market shift (IEA 2023).

Industry Response to Emissions Standards

**Mitsubishi** has been particularly vocal about needing incentives alongside mandates. They argue that a balanced approach is necessary for a smooth transition.

“You can give as many sticks as you like, but we need carrots.”

—**Mitsubishi Representative**

Despite concerns, **Mitsubishi** is standing by its decision to continue producing combustion engine vehicles, while also investing in PHEV technology.
