Toronto Swelters Under Prolonged Heat Wave
Humidity expected to make it feel like 40°C until Thursday
A prolonged period of sweltering conditions has prompted a heat warning for Toronto, with daytime highs feeling close to 40°C with humidity. Environment Canada warns the heat wave could last until Thursday.
Heat Wave Duration
The weather agency issued the warning Friday morning as the city braced for a scorcher where the mercury soared to 30°C, feeling closer to 37°C with the humidex. According to Environment Canada, daytime highs will generally range from 29°C to 32°C for much of the next week, with the humidex making it feel like 35°C to 40°C.
Weekend Outlook
Conditions are expected to worsen on Saturday, with Environment Canada predicting a high of 32°C that will feel as hot as 41°C with the humidex. There might be some relief on Sunday with a 60 per cent chance of showers, but the temperature is still expected to reach a daytime high of 30°C.
Official Warning
“This week southern Ontario will experience hot and humid conditions. The temperatures and humidex will meet or be extremely close to heat warning criteria, with the hottest day being Saturday,”
the warning from Environment Canada states. “A shift in the weather pattern on Thursday will likely end this multi-day period of heat and humidity. Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health.”
Health Impacts
During this heatwave, overnight lows are expected to range from 19°C to 23°C, “providing little relief from the heat.”
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause heatstroke, exhaustion, and other health problems. Toronto Public Health reports a 5% increase in emergency room visits during heat waves (Toronto.ca).
Staying Safe
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned environments, and check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. The City of Toronto has opened cooling centers to provide respite from the heat.
