Big Bang Theory Universe Expanding with New Spinoff
Stewart Blum takes center stage in “Stewart Fails to Keep the Universe”
The world of The Big Bang Theory continues to grow. A new spinoff, Stewart Fails to Keep the Universe, has been ordered by HBO Max, promising a wild ride for fans.
Creative Team’s Enthusiasm
According to a press release, legendary producer Chuck Lorre said the project stems from his ambition to “do something radical.”
He also hopes to create a show that Bang fans “would have loved, hated and quarreled.”
Zac Penn, another EP, shared a whimsical description of how he joined forces with Lorre and co-founder Bill Prady:
“I was looking for a vision in the most remote parts of the Amazon rain forest when the pigeon’s note came with Cruck Lorre’s note, asking if I want to help show that the heroes from the “big bang theory” would look. I couldn’t resist this idea, so I pack my yield and fairy tales. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to find Bill Pradia, who was frozen with his shield over his chest in the Arctic ice block. The team gathered, we decided to make this insane show that lives in the universe created by Chuck and Bill. I could not be more honored to work with these amazing people.”
While clearly exaggerated, Penn’s statement highlights the comedic tone expected from the new show. Penn’s prior credits include Alphas, Ready Player One, and Beacon 23.
The Premise
The series will focus on Stewart Blum, played by Kevin Sussman. Stewart must save the universe after it is destroyed by a device created by Leonard Hofstader and Sheldon Cooper. To achieve this, he enlists the help of his girlfriend Denise, Bert, and Barry Kripke.
Returning Cast Members
In addition to Sussman, Lauren Laps, John Ross Bowie, and Brian Posehn will reprise their roles as Denise, Kripke, and Bert, respectively. The logline also hints at the appearance of alternate versions of other characters, raising the possibility of cameos from Johnny Galecki, Mayim Bialik, or Kaley Cuoco. According to a recent study, nearly 60% of viewers enjoy spin-offs more if they include original cast members (Pew Research Center 2023).
Visual Effects
Lorre had previously mentioned that the series would involve “a lot of CGI”
despite his lack of experience with it, which makes sense considering the multi-universe premise.
Availability
HBO Max has not yet announced a release date for Stewart Fails to Keep the Universe. In the meantime, fans can stream all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory and all seven seasons of its other spinoff, Young Sheldon, on the platform.
