Brumbies Bid Farewell to Debreczeni, O’Donnell

As the Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies gear up to face the British & Irish Lions, two players, fly half Jack Debreczeni and wing Ben O’Donnell, are set to depart, marking the end of their tenure with the club.

Larkham’s Appreciation

Ahead of their final game next Wednesday, head coach Stephen Larkham expressed his gratitude for their contributions to the team during their time in Canberra. Acknowledging their impact both on and off the field, Larkham stated, “Everyone at the Brumbies wishes Ben and Jack the best for the future.”

He added, “They’ve both made a massive contribution to the club on and off the field during their time here. I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to the chance of playing in front of our fans at GIO Stadium one last time next week, against a world-class team in the British & Irish Lions.”

Debreczeni’s Rugby Journey

Debreczeni, 32, arrived at the Brumbies in 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience from stints at Melbourne Rebels, Honda Heat, Hino Red Dolphins, and the Chiefs. He earned 28 caps for the Brumbies, demonstrating his playmaking skills. Currently, Debreczeni is weighing his options regarding his playing future.

In Round 12 of last year’s competition, Debreczeni played a crucial role in guiding the team to a 29-21 victory over the Waratahs amidst challenging weather conditions at Allianz Stadium. In rugby union, fly-halves have immense importance on the field, as only 14% of players make it to the professional level, underlining Debreczeni’s achievement (NCSA Sports 2023).

O’Donnell’s Next Chapter

Also joining the Brumbies in 2023, O’Donnell, 29, previously played for Australia Sevens and Connacht. In 2018, he was honored with the Shawn Mackay award. Injury setbacks have limited his appearances to nine games, and a hamstring operation in February sidelined him for this year’s Super Rugby Pacific campaign. O’Donnell is now preparing to join French side Aurillac on a two-year contract.

Final Appearance

Next Wednesday’s match against the British & Irish Lions at GIO Stadium will mark the final opportunity for fans to see Debreczeni and O’Donnell in action for the Brumbies. Tickets are available here.
