How Vitamin C Works at the Cellular Level

Researchers created lab-grown skin models to study vitamin C’s effects on skin growth. They applied vitamin C in varying doses. After seven days, the living layer of the skin became thicker, indicating increased cell growth.

The study discovered vitamin C reactivates essential genes by removing methyl groups from DNA. These groups typically silence genes, and removing them allows the genes to turn on, promoting skin cell growth and repair.

The researchers found that when vitamin C was present, the skin cells grew more actively. This led to thicker, healthier skin layers. According to Dr. Ishigami, “VC helps thicken the skin by encouraging keratinocyte proliferation through DNA demethylation, making it a promising treatment for thinning skin, especially in older adults.”

Therefore, vitamin C may soon play a more significant role in daily skincare routines, not just as an antioxidant, but also as a genetic rejuvenator.
