Bodies of Hostages Recovered from Gaza After October 7 Attack
In a poignant development, the remains of three individuals held hostage following the October 7 Hamas-led attacks have been recovered from the Gaza Strip. This retrieval brings a measure of closure to grieving families while highlighting the ongoing complexities of the conflict.
Recovered Hostages
A joint operation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) led to the recovery of the bodies. Those identified include IDF soldier Shay Levinson and civilians Ofra Keidar and Yonatan Samerano. The ISA and IDF made the announcement in a joint statement.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life. Since the October 7 offensive, the death toll in Gaza has reached over 55,000 individuals (Al Jazeera, May 2024).
Individual Stories
Ofra Keidar, 71, was a resident of the kibbutz Be’eri. She was killed during the initial Hamas attacks, and her body was held in Gaza since then. Yonatan Samerano, 21, was taken after the Nova music festival attack.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed that the return of the bodies offers solace to families who have endured agonizing uncertainty. The Forum also stressed the importance of prioritizing the release of the approximately 50 hostages still held in Gaza.
