Cornwall ‘leading the way in diabetes care’

Cornwall’s Diabetes Clinics Expand, Promoting Well-being

Innovative diabetes super clinics in Cornwall are expanding to improve patient education and overall well-being. This expansion is part of a proactive approach to diabetes care, supporting individuals through support groups and health-focused walks.

Community Support Through Walking

The NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly is enhancing diabetes care with support groups and health walks. One such walking group participant, Jennie Brown, praised the supportive and helpful nature of the walks and the people involved.

Jennie Brown said the walks “had been really supportive and really helpful”

Personal Transformation

Jennie Brown shared her personal journey, explaining how a type 2 diabetes diagnosis served as a wake-up call. She committed to improving her health, losing almost 6 stone (38kg) and regaining her energy. Her story highlights the potential for positive change with lifestyle adjustments.

“After my husband died I had a year of not looking after myself and basically I was eating a diet of white carbs and sugar and got the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.”

Diabetes affects millions globally; in the U.S., over 37 million people have diabetes (CDC 2024).

Integrated Approach

The NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board has created a five-year diabetes transformation plan. Dr. Chris Reid, the chief medical officer, is proud of the innovative work across Cornwall, highlighting the health walks as an example of integrated care.

Unique Journeys

Tracy Crossley, whose husband Les has diabetes, emphasized the uniqueness of each person’s experience with the condition. Open discussions and the support from the team have provided valuable knowledge. Seeing Les motivated to be healthy for their daughter’s wedding highlights the impact of support.

“Everyone’s experience with diabetes is unique, and discussing it openly fosters understanding.”

The expanded clinics and integrated programs demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of those with diabetes through education, community support, and personalized care.
